Back Pain Relief Through Exercise

Pain is a constant companion when you injure your back. It can range from mild to extreme. It can alter your life, your job, and your daily routine. When you are afflicted with back pain the healing process is slow. Controlling and relieving back pain can become a full time job. The healing process is unusual compared to other injuries and feels like it is taking a life time.

You have several options for relieving back pain and with a little experimentation you will find what is best for your own healing. Exercise, new positions, and medication can put you back on the path to a normal life. Be careful when choosing your options and always move gently until you are sure the pain is fading.

After an injury from back strain consider natural healing. Letting your back heal naturally is a wonderful way to protect your health and avoid medication. Your body can heal naturally with time and gentle movement.

Do not remain laying down. Move gently with walking time and rest time. Do not lift anything during this healing time. Once the pain begins to lessen you can return to your normal activities. However, you must still avoid lifting, quick movements and twist, and over straining your back.

Following a yoga program for back injuries is a wonderful way to strengthen the muscles, relieve the pain, and remove the stress of your day. Yoga provides gentle movement and can target the injured area. For classes near you check with your local recreation department or purchase a Yoga for Beginners CD at your local department store.

Stand with your feet slightly apart in a comfortable position. Raise one arm toward the sky in a slow, even movement. Once your arm is at full extension begin to stretch until you feel gentle pulling. If you feel extreme pain then stop. Hold for five seconds, lower your arm and repeat on the other side.

Now stretch the other arm in the same way. This will loosen and stretch the muscles around the injured area without causing more damage. Hold for five seconds and lower your arm back to your side. Stand in a relaxed position for ten seconds and repeat. Do this exercise three times a day to begin.

Hot and cold is a very effective method of relieving back pain. They are easy to use and your local department store carries a variety to choose from. By applying a hot compress for ten minutes then changing it to a cold compress for ten minutes it will relax muscles and reduce swelling. Each package has easy to follow instruction and they are well worth the investment.

If the injury is not responding to other treatments you may have to seek help from a physical therapist. The therapist will check your records and schedule a set of exercises for you to follow while under their care. If you follow the exercise plan you should feel relief within the first week.

The therapist will include mild stretches, weights, leg lifts, and home instructions for your to follow once a week to four days a week depending on your injury. During this time do not lift over a set weight limit. The weight limit will be decided by your therapist.

Your last option is back surgery. Surgery is for injuries that cannot be corrected by any other method. It will involve time off from work and follow up therapy ordered by your surgeon. Back surgery requires time to heal and very long term therapy.

If you choose back surgery be sure you choose your surgeon carefully. Back surgery is a difficult operation, but with care and a good medical team your recovery can be less painful than the injury. Follow your surgeons instructions and do not over do yourself just because you are feeling better. If you try to do too much, too soon you can destroy all the work your doctor has invested his time to perfect so you can lead a normal life.

Finally as with any pain you can use over the counter medication for relief while following a healing program. Your back health is important. Each day you are able to function is a step closer to complete healing, normal activity and a great future. Get help early when you are in pain and enjoy every moment of your life once you can live again pain free.

  1. There are many myths floating around out there regarding back pain. To truly understand what is at the root of your back pain try this simple test. Lie down on your back for 30 seconds with legs extended out, resting on the floor. Now bend your knees so the feet are sitting flat on the floor near your behind for 30 seconds. Which one feels better? If your back pain diminishes with knees bent then your spine has excessive extension stress acting on it. There are simple exercises to correct this. If your spine felt better with legs extended then you have excessive flexion stress acting on your spine. Again this is easily correctable.
Chronic pain results from a cycle of issues. Anatomical problems feed biomechanical issues which then affect movement habits that reinforce the original anatomical and biomechanical problems. Fixing back pain requires attention to all three levels. It’s quite simple to correct though.
