Building Wooden Jewelry Boxes Part One

Building a wooden jewelry box can be as easy as 1 2 3. All that it takes is the right knowledge and a couple of steps.

The very first step in building a wooden jewelry box is to decide what you want it to look like. Having a general idea of what you want the finished jewelry box to look like is a fantastic idea. This not only helps you to visualize the final project but it also helps in finding out all of the materials.

An example of this would be if you were building little girl’s jewelry box painted white with purple flowers. The bare minimum materials that you would need would be wood, white and purple paint and a paint brush.

The key to this step is to just have fun and make sure that you know kind of what you are going for. The best way to do this is to brainstorm daydream. You are not looking to see every detail just the overall picture.

After you have a good idea of what it is that you want your jewelry box to look like, it is time to make a list of all of the materials that you will need and gather them. Some of the most basic materials that I always use are: wood (I usually use cherry, oak, cedar or mahogany, these types of woods tend to give me better looking boxes),screws or nails (my personal preference is to dove tail the boxes but I do use finishing nails a lot as well),wood glue, a spray adhesive, a saw ( I try to use a jig saw, band saw and a chop saw these make my life so much easier), sand paper/ sander(I use a fine grit and rough grit) u can use a hand saw if this is all that you have access to), hammer, two small hinges, measuring tape, utility knife and a pencil or pen.

Once you have picked out the materials for the exterior of your jewelry box it is now time to choose those for the interior. These materials can be made up from anything that you can think of including felt, silk, velvet, leather or anything else. The only thing that I might caution is that they be both easy to work with and long lasting.

This is the end of the first portion on how to build a wooden jewelry box. In the next article we will be talking about how to put all of the materials to their intended uses.
