Learn About Energy Efficient Gas Filled Upvc Windows
The letters uPVC is an acronym for unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. PVC pipes are made up of plasticized polyvinyl chloride. Unplasticized is also referred to as rigid PVC. In construction, uPVC is a material used instead of wood sometimes. It requires less maintenance than wood does. UPVC windows are windows with surrounding uPVC.
As it applies to windows, uPVC is the same thing as double glazing. It is used to mean that because uPVC is used in the frame of the window. Double glazed windows are also known as insulating glass units. These are windows that are specially made to insulate against temperature and noise.
To make double glazed windows two panes of glass are mounted very close to each other. The gap between the windows if filled with a gas. This gas helps to stop sound and temperature from crossing from outside to inside. It can also be filled with vacuum. For the amount of insulation they provide, uPVC windows give very good visibility.
The gap between the panes of glass are the key to the insulation. Sometimes this gap has a vacuum in it. There is no atoms in a vacuum, so there is nothing that can conduct sound through. This keeps quite a bit of outside noises out and inside noises in. Also heat and cold can not go directly through the vacuum, so it comes through much more slowly than it otherwise would.
The best insulator is a vacuum, but very few uPVC windows use this. That is because the window has to be very strong to contain a vacuum. A partial vacuum can be used, but this is uncommon. A partial vacuum means they have removed some of the air, but not all of it. Usually a gas is used though. This can be argon, xenon, or krypton.
These gasses are chosen because none of them are harmful. They are all stable, and have no smell or color. That means they won’t distort the view through the window. Krypton is used for the high performance windows, or those that have a small gap between the two panes. Argon is used for most regular uPVC windows. Xenon isn’t normally used at all, because it is very expensive.
Double paned windows are used to stop the movement of heat into or out of your house. If the outside is a different temperature from the inside, you are spending energy and money to keep it that way. Insulation helps make it so you need less energy. This can save money, as well as helping out the environment.
