Playing The Guitar Is Easier To Learn Than You Consider

I remember, a long time ago, I saw a concert with Stevie Ray Vaughn, before he was really famous. He played in a gymnasium in San Diego. I was about three yards from the stage, close enough to watch his fingers flying across the neck of his guitar with surprising speed and accuracy. It was perhaps the most profound musical experience I’ve ever encountered.

Something about being able to play music, and the guitar in particular, seems to have a powerful effect on people. It’s as if by playing the guitar you tap into some part of human nature that is inaccessible through words alone. Like you can express things that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to express.

Lots of people these days would like to learn the guitar, above all else. Sadly, many people mistakenly believe that learning the guitar takes too much time, or too much effort. The guitar is the most popular instrument today for a reason. It’s really not that difficult to learn. Of course, if you want to be the best in the world, you’re going to need a lot of practice, but to get started is pretty easy.

When you break it down, guitar playing falls into two categories. Playing chords, or groups of notes, or playing individual notes. Chords is considered “strumming” while notes is sometimes considered “picking.” Either of these is relatively easy to learn, but most people choose to start by playing a few basic chords.

The great thing about learning chords is that today’s popular music, most of the stuff you hear on the radio, consists of only three or four chords. So once you learn these chords, you can play along with our favorite band, for the entire song. That’s a pretty good feeling to be able to do that.

If you’ve ever thought about playing guitar, just a little, now is the best time to get started. There are plenty of great courses out there that help you to learn the guitar in the privacy of your own home. What are you waiting for? Get started today.
