Sleep Apnea Is A Large and Repeatedly Under Diagnosed Dilemma

The other day I was hanging out with my girlfriend, and we were waiting for something or other. I’m not exactly sure, as it was one of those things that she just kind of dragged me along to. One of those things that you can’t really get out of.

While we were waiting for her turn, I kept dozing off. She kept elbowing me in the gut to wake me up. But when she was actually getting her hair done, I was a mess. Afterwards she asked why I had stayed up so late the night before. When I told her I had gotten my normal eight hours, she became worried.

When she was a kid, her dad would snore incredibly loud, keeping the whole family up the entire night. Finally when they convinced him he’d had a problem, he went to the doctor to get it checked out. Turned out he had sleep apnea, which is when you stop breathing while you are sleeping. This is dangerous.

The doctor went over all the symptoms with the family. Common ones are sleepiness during the day, headaches, frequent waking up to go to the bathroom, and so on. Lucky they were able to find a solution. Most people don’t know about the dangers that come with undiagnosed sleep apnea.

What worried my girlfriend was the fact that I was nodding off so quickly despite thinking I’d gotten a good nights sleep the night before. One of the classic sleep apnea symptoms is feeling tired when you are bored, even though you think you’ve gotten a full nights sleep.

So our next stop was the doctor. He said that it was too early to tell without more information. He told me to keep a sleep journal, and record everything whenever I wake up, and to collect as much information regarding possible symptoms as possible. That way it will be much easier for him to suggest a treatment.
